Author: Dr. Kelly Blasko is a research psychologist at the National Center for Telehealth & Technology (T2).
Thinking you might like to see a therapist? Therapy can be a helpful and life-changing experience…that is, if you find the right therapist. There are free or low cost options available to service members and veterans on base, as well as options available in the community that your insurance may cover. But how do you even find the right therapist for you? Here are a few tips to think about as you look for a therapist.
Decide on what characteristics you would like in a therapist. Do you want a therapist that is male or female, younger or older, a particular race/ethnicity, straight or gay, religious or not? What characteristics are important to you?
Practice what you want to say to them before you call them. One of the hardest parts of finding a therapist is calling them. I find it helps to have a little script together prior to making the call. For example, “My name is Kelly and I’m looking for a therapist and would like to talk to you about the possibility of working together.” Most likely you will get voicemail so they will have to call you back. Don’t feel as if you have to give your whole life story in one message. Just ask for what you need. When they call you back you may have to say why you are seeking help, so just have a brief description ready like, “I’m having a lot of anxiety.”
Treat the first visit as an interview. You have to feel comfortable with this person, so it is entirely okay to ask questions that are important to you. Some questions that I think might be helpful are: “Do you have hours that fit my schedule?” “How long have you been a practicing therapist?” “Have you worked with anyone who is/was in the military?” “What is your clinical area of expertise?”
Ask the question “How will you help me?” I think one of the most important questions to ask is “How will you help me?” or “How do you think change happens in therapy?” Some therapists will give you a scientific answer and some a down-to-earth answer. Whatever the answer is it has to make sense to you! If you don’t understand how they will help you with your problem then you might not understand what is happening in therapy.
Don’t feel pressured to make a decision right away. You might want to go home and think about it before you decide whether you want to work this therapist or not. It is your decision. There are many therapists out there so it is important to find someone you feel comfortable working with.
